Indiana University's seasonal Space Heater Exchange program concluded this spring after faculty and staff across Bloomington, Indianapolis and the regional campuses traded 222 high-wattage space heaters for energy-efficient alternatives. Over the 2025-2026 winter season, participants voluntarily exchanged their space heaters for electric blankets, heated seat cushions, heated foot warmers, and non-electric cotton throws.
The 222 exchanges are projected to save approximately 119,050 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—about the amount of electricity used by nearly 17 average U.S. homes in one year—while reducing utility costs by an estimated $20,190 each year. Since the program launched in 2023, the cumulative energy and cost savings have continued to grow.
Beyond energy savings, retiring space heaters mitigates safety and operational challenges across campus. Because space heaters generate intense, concentrated heat, they pose a fire risk if left unattended or placed too close to office furniture and curtains. Space heaters can also trip breakers, causing disruptions in electrical service.
From an operational standpoint, space heaters disrupt central building climate control systems. When a space heater is placed near a wall thermostat, it can trick the sensor into thinking the entire room is too warm. This can cause the building to cool an office even when occupants already feel cold.
By focusing on heating people rather than entire spaces, this program demonstrates a simple yet effective way members of the IU community can stay comfortable while reducing energy use, improving building operations, and supporting the university's sustainability goals. The program also received regional media attention this winter, with WRTV featuring IU's Space Heater Exchange Program and its innovative approach to reducing energy use while improving occupant comfort.
